The body angle is limited to a maximum of 55°, leaving a safety margin. Safe limits: tail-down slope + body ≤ 55°, lateral slope ≤ 5° and nose-down slope ≤ 5° (for nose-down slope, the combined-angle rule does not apply; the body is lowered directly). Above these is one overriding precondition: if the vehicle exceeds 10 km/h, the body cannot be raised at all — Transit Lock locks the hydraulics; the threshold can be calibrated for the site.

Not one number: two separate limits

MetaDamper measures the ground on two axes at the same time. The longitudinal axis determines how far the body may rise; the lateral axis determines whether it must not rise at all or must be lowered immediately. Both limits apply at the same time — meeting one does not make the other unnecessary.

Above these two angle limits is another precondition that has nothing to do with angle: Transit Lock. Integrated GPS monitors vehicle speed; the moment the vehicle exceeds the 10 km/h threshold, the hydraulics are locked and the body — no matter how level the ground is — cannot be raised at all. In other words, before asking “how far can it rise?”, the system answers “can it rise now?”. The body angle is limited to a maximum of 55°, leaving a safety margin.

Axis 01 — longitudinal

Ground slope + body angle

The vehicle’s tail-down slope is added together with the body opening angle, and this total is monitored continuously as the body rises: the body is stopped the moment the total reaches 55°. On a 5° slope the body can rise to 50°, and on a 10° slope to 45° — as the slope increases, the system automatically reduces the body’s allowable angle. When the vehicle is nose-down, the combined-angle rule does not apply: if nose-down slope exceeds 5°, the body is stopped and lowered directly because of the risk of hoist ram failure and the body falling onto the cab.

Lateral tilt limit

The true trigger for rollover is the lateral axis: as the body rises, the centre of gravity moves upward and even a small lateral tilt can be enough to cause a rollover. That is why MetaDamper allows a much narrower margin laterally — the moment the vehicle tilts more than 5° on the ground, the raised body is stopped where it is and automatically lowered; if the body is down, it is not allowed to rise at all.

The Problem

Why do tipper trucks roll over?

Earthmoving tippers are the workhorses of construction sites — different specifications, different power levels, rigid trucks or tractor units; but all with tipping bodies. Their biggest challenge is slope at discharge areas. Tipper rollover accident prevention starts with recognising these conditions before unloading; otherwise they can lead to unwanted accidents, property damage and, most importantly, loss of life.

Sloping Ground

When a tipper truck or tipper semi-trailer raises its body on uneven ground, gravity shifts the load towards the slope during discharge. An 8° slope alone can be enough to cause a rollover — and it is almost impossible for the driver to judge this accurately from the cab. Starting to raise the body without recognising the slope can make an accident unavoidable.

Ground Subsidence & Vehicle Risk

Ground subsidence caused by loose and variable material, together with lateral tilt caused by suspension problems or tyres, can trigger a rollover. On sloping ground, the load can build up on one side of the body, shifting the centre of gravity and causing the vehicle to lean towards the loaded side. As the body rises, the centre of gravity rises with it; this is why even 5° of lateral tilt can be enough to trigger a rollover — MetaDamper uses this exact threshold on the lateral axis.

The Tailgate Not Opening

If the tailgate does not open while the body is being raised, the load cannot discharge and the vehicle can rear up. Where the discharge area is close to an embankment edge or other severe hazard, the result can be loss of life and major property damage, along with high repair costs, higher insurance premiums and substantial time and productivity losses.

Accidental Raising in Transit

The risk is not limited to the discharge area — it also exists on the road. An accidental movement of the control lever, a hydraulic valve fault or inattention can leave a tipper body up while driving. The consequences can be severe: strikes on overpasses and bridges, contact with power transmission lines, loads spilled onto the road and a potentially fatal hazard for following traffic. Drivers often cannot see a raised body clearly in the rear-view mirror. MetaDamper’s Transit Lock monitors speed through integrated GPS and locks the hydraulics the moment the vehicle exceeds 10 km/h.

Detection

The 6-axis gyroscope and accelerometer measure both axes together: longitudinal slope is added to body angle, while lateral slope (lateral tilt) is monitored against a separate limit. The system is calibrated for each site — thresholds are adjusted for the vehicle type and ground conditions.

Audible and visual warnings are given in the cab; right / left warning lamps show the driver the direction of the slope — warning begins as lateral slope approaches the 5° threshold.

Integrated GPS monitors vehicle position and speed. The moment the vehicle exceeds the 10 km/h threshold, the hydraulics are locked; accidental body raising on the road is blocked. If the vehicle moves with the body raised, the body is stopped and automatically lowered. The threshold can be calibrated for the site.

Body Sensor optional

The wireless sensor mounted beneath the body monitors the maximum lifting angle; when the body reaches its limit, it is stopped automatically, helping protect component life. If the vehicle begins to settle tail-down, the combined angle locks at 55° — the body is retracted (11° + 44° = 55°) — preventing rearward rollover.

Tailgate Sensor optional

The wireless sensor fitted to the tailgate confirms that it has opened: the body will not rise until the tailgate opens. It also detects potential hydraulic ram failures and helps prevent related accidents.

MetaStop

If the vehicle begins to roll over despite all previous safeguards and the lateral angle exceeds 45°, MetaStop shuts down the engine. Even if the vehicle rolls over, the engine is not forced to keep running, helping prevent severe engine and drivetrain damage, major maintenance costs and extended vehicle downtime.

All critical events and operational data are recorded — the evidence is always ready. Daily checklist responses are reported from the same source.

Installation: On vehicles with electrically controlled tipping systems, the product is fitted directly; on systems with pneumatic hoist control, an optional conversion kit converts the vehicle to an electrically controlled system.
Calibration: After installation, the system is calibrated to the vehicle type and site. Thresholds are adjusted to ground characteristics, allowing the same product to operate reliably from earthmoving sites to mine haul ramps, embankment edges and port areas.

How does the system behave in the field?

The MetaDamper unit is installed in the driver’s cab, with two warning lamps on the dashboard. The device detects slope and ground subsidence; if the ground slopes to the right, the right warning light comes on; if it slopes to the left, the left warning light comes on. The driver responds by finding level ground and only then raising the body. If the vehicle reaches a sloping point while the body is being raised, the system immediately starts lowering it; even if the driver tries to raise the body on sloping ground, the system categorically does not allow it.

If a slope develops after the body has been raised, the system identifies the direction and automatically lowers the body. The moment the vehicle tilts more than 5°, the body stops rising; it is stopped where it is and lowered — this is the threshold at which lateral rollover can begin. With the optional tailgate system, if the tailgate does not open, audible and visual warnings are given and the body is automatically lowered to prevent rearing up and rearward rollover.

The risk is not limited to the discharge area: an accidental movement of the control lever or a hydraulic valve fault can leave a tipper body up while driving — creating the risk of striking an overpass, bridge or power transmission line, spilling the load onto the road and creating a potentially fatal hazard for following traffic. The threshold can be calibrated during installation to suit the site’s operating pattern.

How do a tipper body angle sensor and inclinometer work?

The tipper body angle sensor measures how many degrees the body is raised relative to the chassis; the tipper tilt sensor (inclinometer) measures the slope of the ground beneath the vehicle. MetaDamper combines these two inputs through 6-axis gyroscope and accelerometer fusion and turns them into a single safety decision.

The rule has two axes. First, the longitudinal axis: ground slope + body angle ≤ 55°. If the combined angle would exceed this limit, the body cannot be raised at all — for example, on a 5° slope the body can rise only to 50°, locking at a combined total of exactly 55°. Second, the lateral axis: the moment the vehicle’s lateral tilt exceeds 5°, a rising body is stopped and automatically lowered; if the body is down, it is not allowed to rise at all.

Why is the lateral limit so narrow? Because the vehicle’s track width is much shorter than its length, and as the body rises the load’s centre of gravity moves upward. In this geometry, even a few degrees of tilt can initiate a rollover; while the longitudinal axis has an allowance up to 55°, the safe lateral range ends at 5°. Tipper body stability control therefore relies on two-axis measurement, not the driver’s eye.

What is a tipper tilt sensor, and what does it measure?

A tipper tilt sensor — technically an inclinometer — measures the slope of the ground beneath the vehicle. A body angle sensor measures how far the tipper body has opened relative to the chassis. These are different quantities, and a correct safety decision requires both. MetaDamper’s tipper inclinometer works with 6-axis gyroscope and accelerometer fusion and reports slope separately on two axes: longitudinal slope is added to body angle, while lateral slope is monitored against its own 5° limit.

Why can this not be left to the driver’s eye? Because a driver looking from the cab cannot reliably detect an 8° slope; freshly placed fill, wet ground and one-sided subsidence can be visually deceptive. The tipper tilt sensor converts that difference into a number in milliseconds, displays it in the cab and, if necessary, prevents lifting from starting at all. Site-specific calibration allows the same sensor to work reliably across very different ground conditions, from construction sites and mine haul ramps to embankment edges and port areas.

The tipper body discharges to the rear; on the longitudinal axis, ground slope and body angle are added together, with the rollover threshold defined at a combined 55°. Laterally, the vehicle’s track width is much shorter than its length; as the body rises, the centre of gravity moves upward and even a few degrees of tilt can be enough to cause a rollover. That is why a much narrower safety margin — 5° — is applied on the lateral axis.

MetaStop is the final line of defence if the vehicle begins to roll over despite all earlier safeguards: it shuts down the engine the moment lateral angle exceeds 45°. This prevents the engine from continuing to run during the rollover, helping avoid loss of lubrication, severe drivetrain damage, major maintenance costs and extended vehicle downtime. There are two thresholds on the lateral axis: at 5° the body is stopped and lowered; at 45° MetaStop shuts down the engine.

Audible warnings and right / left warning lamps in the cab show the direction of slope. The optional 4.3″ touchscreen supports the daily checklist workflow and immediately reports the device’s own faults such as sensor connection, power supply and cable issues.

It is compatible with all tipper truck brands — there are no brand restrictions. Note: the wireless tailgate sensor package is not recommended for chain-operated or manually opened tailgates.

The 6-axis gyroscope and accelerometer continuously measure vehicle slope and movement on two axes. On the longitudinal axis, ground slope and body angle are added together and lifting is prevented if the 55° limit would be exceeded; on the lateral axis, the body is automatically lowered if lateral tilt exceeds 5°.

A tipper tilt sensor (inclinometer) measures the slope of the ground beneath the vehicle; a tipper body angle sensor measures how many degrees the body has opened relative to the chassis. MetaDamper reports slope separately on two axes using 6-axis gyroscope and accelerometer fusion: longitudinal slope is added to body angle and evaluated against the 55° limit, while lateral slope is evaluated against the 5° limit. Because a driver cannot reliably judge an 8° slope from the cab, this measurement cannot be left to human perception.

After installation, the system is calibrated to the vehicle type and site, with thresholds adjusted to ground characteristics. This allows the same product to operate reliably across different ground conditions — from earthmoving sites and mine haul ramps to embankment edges and port areas. Calibration is carried out by the field team as part of installation and training support.

Before starting the day, the driver completes the daily vehicle check on the 4.3″ in-cab touchscreen. Unlike a separate daily vehicle check app for fleets, the workflow is built into the cab display. Because an expected answer is defined for every question, deviating responses (for example body/tipper mechanism, tyre, brake or tailgate) are immediately flagged on the fleet dashboard. Days that are not submitted or left incomplete are also shown automatically. Records are reported from the same source as black-box data and provide evidence for the OHS record, driver feedback and insurance processes.

Slope values, body movements, warnings issued and intervention events are recorded with timestamps. These records can be used as evidence in OHS reporting, driver training and claims processes.

MetaDamper’s Transit Lock prevents this scenario. The integrated GPS continuously monitors vehicle position and speed; the moment the vehicle exceeds the 10 km/h threshold, the hydraulic system is locked and body raising is completely blocked. If the vehicle starts moving with the body already raised, the body is stopped where it is and automatically lowered. This body-up interlock prevents a tipper body up while driving due to accidental control-lever movement or a hydraulic valve fault, reducing the risk of overpass / bridge and power-line strikes and load spillage onto the road. The speed threshold can be calibrated during installation to suit the site’s operating pattern.

The product is CE certified, holds a Domestic Goods Certificate, and is patented under TR 2024 015433 B. It carries a 1-year warranty, with support services free of charge during the warranty period.
